BioAg: Digest-it Livestock Slurry Digester

Slurry management is a growing concern on many UK livestock farms due to increased herd size and environmental issues. Although the volume and composition of slurry produced varies greatly according to the individual herd and season.

Non-performing slurry systems are instantly recognisable by the presence of persistent surface crusting and their pervasive odour. The depletion of oxygen in the slurry, combined with lack of sunlight, reduces microbial digestion. The proliferation of anaerobic bacteria can lead to an increase in hydrogen sulphide (i.e. rotten egg gas) and increased pH (i.e. alkalinity).

Digest-it helps to create and maintain a balanced microbial environment in slurry lagoons thereby stimulating microbial digestion of organic matter. This fermented microbial culture contains a rich source of vitamins, minerals, proteins, enzymes, amino acids, carbohydrates, dormant organisms and nutrients. In effect, it provides a rich food source for microbes as well as dormant aerobic bacteria species.

Digest-it  is ideal for all types of slurry management systems. Depending on the thickness of the surface crust, a number of physical and chemical changes can be observed in lagoons within four to six weeks of beginning treatment.

Features and Benefits

• Stimulates aerobic microbial activity.

• Converts solids into plant-available liquid nutrients.

• Reduces fertiliser costs.

• Reduces surface crusting.

• Reduces odour.

• Reduces energy required to stir and pump slurry.

• Increases the liquid to solid ratio.

• Improves fertiliser nutrient value.

• Digested slurry improves soil fertility.

To see the effectiveness of Digest-it to date, download the PDF documents below and take a look at the results of our recent dairy farm trials:

Digest-it Trial Headlines:
  • Nitrogen increased by 33%.
  • Ammonium-N decreased from 41% to 35% of total N, indicating an increase in organic-N from 59% to 65% of total N.
  • Phosphorus increased by 28%.
  • Potassium increased by 34%.
  • Slight drop in pH.
  • Aerobic:Anaerobic ratio increased over trial period by x 4.3 at Day 1 analysis and x 2.5 at Day 5 analysis.
